Rice mortar for sake preparation, carved from Zelkova parvifolia wood, commonly known as Japanese elm. Made during the Tokugawa shogunate, in the period of the tenth shogun, Tokugawa Ieharu, it is in an excellent state of preservation due to the quality of its wood and the unique felling and manufacturing techniques of traditional Japanese artisans.
