COLUMN OF A SICILIAN ALTAR

The well-deserved title of Urbs Opulentissima, bestowed by Emperor Charles V, reveals the magnificence that the plastic arts reached in Piazza Armerina. This fragment of an altar, circumscribed in the early Sicilian Baroque style, brings out the restraint and rationality inherent in the Lombard minority of Sicily and, in turn, refers to the magnificent Roman heritage of the city.
