Neoclassical liturgical consoles
Neoclassical liturgical consoles
Material: Pine wood and brass
Origin: Oise Department, France, circa 1780
Measurements: 92 cm long x 52 cm wide x 90 cm high
This pair of liturgical consoles, crafted from pine wood with brass mounts, originate from the historical region of Picardy in northwestern France. The geometric precision of their brasswork reflects the geographical proximity of Flanders and England, resulting in an ornamental sequence that is both austere and refined, anticipating the evolution from Palladian Neoclassicism to Gothic Neoclassicism. Originally upholstered in fine fabric and fitted with fittings for holding candles, as evidenced by the grooves along the sides of the tabletops, they were used as side tables at a small altar or in the tabernacle chapel of a rural parish.
